PRESS RELEASE
Ready, Set, Run!
Release Date: September 27, 2016
Location: Kingman, Arizona
My name is Paige Cardiff and I am a student at Southern Utah University. This press release is for my EDGE project which took place this summer. I was a track coach for little kids ages 7-12. I was able to design work outs, teach running techniques, and promote track and field in my community. This took place on June 6, 2016 and finished on July 22, 2016. I met with the kids twice a week at one of the high schools for an hour and a half.
The Parks and Recreation department of Kingman, Arizona asked if I would do this camp based on my experience in track and field. I was happy to except and was excited to teach these kids what I never had growing up. The program was so successful that the parents of the kids asked if we could extent the program an extra 3 weeks. I would constantly get thank yous from the parents and the kids for putting the program on. One of my favorite parts of this track camps was the track meet that I put on for the kids. We had each of them participate in 2 running events and 1 field event or 1 running event and 2 field events and a relay if they desired. We gave out awards to the top 3 in each group which had their place and time in the event.
The person who recruited me for this camp was the summer activities chairman of the Kingman Parks and Recreation department Yyvone Cossio. I reported all of my practices to her and she helped recruit individuals to help put on the track meet at the end of the camp. Also, I could not have done this project with out the EDGE program that Southern Utah University puts on. They encourage us to pick a project we are passionate about and will help us with our future careers.
I hope to be able to continue this program in years to come because of the wonderful experience that I had doing this project. The kids that I got to work with made me want to not only be a better coach but a better person as well. ###

TEAM PARTY
During the 3rd week of my program I wanted to help the kids feel like they were apart on an official team. We came up with our team name but there was still something missing in feeling like a true team. My assistant coach and I decided that we would throw a team party for the kids. On one of our practice days we did a team run, which was a half mile, to this classic old diner and bought them ice cream. This allowed us to show them that we take running seriously but we like to have fun as well. The kids became closer friends and from this experience we were able to teach them that running can both be serious and fun at the same time.

Ready, Set, Run!
For my EDGE project I was the director of a track camp in my home town of Kingman, Arizona. The camp began on Monday June 6, 2016 and ended on Friday July 22, 2016. I worked with the Parks and Recreation department and they provided the necessary equipment to run a track camp. This equipment included batons for relays, a soft ball for the soft ball throw, a long jump pit, and timers for the track meet. I was assisted by one of my high school friends who ran track with me and he helped create some work outs and taught the kids about a few of the events. This camp took place at one of the high schools in Kingman.
It was a 5 week program meeting 2 days out of the week for 2 hours. The program actually was extended for another 3 weeks because the parents and kids loved it a lot. The age of the children participating in this program was originally ages 7-12 however, due to the small amount of kids in the beginning I extended the age from 6 to 14. I held one track meet instead of two due to the decrease in participants for the second half of the camp. I designed practices which included a warm up/stretches, a work out session, and a cool down. For each work out session I taught the kids about the basics of each track and field event to see which ones interested them.
The inspiration for my EDGE project came from one of the bosses I had last summer. I worked at a summer camp program under the direction of the Parks and Recreation department. My boss was also in charge of all of the summer programs that would be offered for the Kingman area. Last summer she asked me if I would be interested in doing a track program for the youth in the area. I was really excited for this opportunity because the previous summer I was also a track coach for kids however, I was not the head coach.
When I first started to plan for my project the hardest part was beginning where to start. I had no idea how in shape these kids were or where their desire to work hard was at. I started by planning simple workouts that were not too hard but not too easy. I had a hard time finding a balance between pushing the kids to do better and letting them have fun. The whole goal of a coach is to push their athletes but not to the point where they dislike the sport. I over came this challenge by designing different types of workouts and including a game at the end of each practice.
Another challenged that I faced was being able to explain the different strategies, techniques, and running terms to kids. Since I have been involved with track and field my whole life, it was hard for me to go back to the basic principles that I first learned as a kid about running. The terms and techniques that I taught them I use on a daily basis during practice and racing. I had to be able to explain to these kids to pump your arms while you run, pace yourself, practice surging, keep your head up, do not look back, kick it in the last 100 meters, and many more. It taught me that as a coach you need to take the time to thoroughly explain whatever it is you are trying to teach someone and take the time to listen to them. These kids were not just kids that were helping me with my EDGE project, they were my team.
This project benefited a variety of people. First, the Parks and Recreation program because it helped add another summer camp for children to participate in and help promote track and field in the community. Second, it helped the parents of the kids in the program have an opportunity to watch their children excel in a sport that they could come and support their kids. Finally, it helped the kids become more confident in themselves and be who they wanted to be. In my program there was no bullying or teasing of any kind. These kids became really good friends and learned the value of working hard.
This project helped become more responsible. I was over a particular group of people who had the expectation that I would be able to provide a fun yet educational environment for their children. I was held to a higher standard to be more professional however, at the same time have fun. These are both colliding concepts but it made me realize that they both can exist at the same time. I had to be willing to talk with parents about concerns that I had with their child and sometimes this was scary but every parent was very supportive of our program and thanked us constantly for putting it on.

REFLECTION
I am grateful for the opportunity that I had to be able to give back to my community. These kids were amazing individuals with completely different personalities that made them who they are. They were hard working, kind , compassionate, full of energy, and made me want to be better. Each one of those kids taught me what it meant to be yourself and go after the big dreams you have. Do not let anything stop you from achieving your goals and cheer people along the way. I hope that one day when I have kids that they will grow to be like those kids. They were the best part of my summer and I can not wait to see what they will do later in life.

TRACK MEET
The kids got to participate in one track meet during the camp. We had an announcer, awards, and so much support from the parents.

GAMES
At the end of almost every practice we would finish off by playing a game. We played duck duck goose, sharks and minnows, and much more. I did not just want to make this camp only about running but allowing the kids to be kids as well.

WORK OUTS
I would design work outs for the kids. We did long distance running, sprints, relays, standing long jump, and the soft ball throw.
TEAM JACK RABBITS
My kids got together and wanted to have a team name. After each practice we did a team break and we were proud to be the Jack Rabbits!

ABOUT ME
My name is Paige Cardiff and I am a student at Southern Utah University. This is my senior year and the journy has been a fun but stressful ride. I was born in Lexington, Kentucky and moved to Kingman, Arizona when I was 6. My entire life I have loved the outdoors and visiting neat places. I love sports, being with my family, and meeting new people. One of my favorite things to do though is track and field. I have done track and field for over 10 years now. Ever since I was 12 I started running and now this is my last year of collegiate running. It has been such an amazing experience and I am thankful for all those who have in some way influence me to go after big dreams and accomplish my life goals.
